CAROLINA MAZZOLARI ALONE TOGETHER
15 July - 28 August 2023 Domus Civica Venice
L'Uno è il Molto/ Alone Together, a site-specific installation that includes a large-scale video-projection with a performance by choreographer Kristen McNally and music by Carolina Mazzolari and Chris Ward, produced by Arthur Baker. The installation, in the context of the Biennale di Venezia Danza 2023, will be open to the public from 15 July until 28 August 2023. Opening on July 14th at 6:30 pm, Venice at Domus Civica, evento in concomitanza Biennale Danza di Venezia.
A site-specific installation and an international teamwork between choreographers and dancers who have performed at the Royal Opera House in London and the Teatro della Scala in Milan. McNally comments on the choreography: "I was inspired by the way the body moves during the process of washing and dyeing fabrics. I'm interested in transforming the movements within these daily rituals – which is choreography in itself – into the language of dance." Mazzolari creates an evocative environment that changes with the alternation of day and night.
During the day, passers-by will see this installation of fabrics moved by fans and at night, the project mapping of the work will take possession of the space, projected onto the moving canvas, illuminating the rooms and windows of the gallery.
Mazzolari will present a tapestry created as a plastic synthesis of the video work, the main element of his artistic practice.
Mazzolari affirms, describing his latest work: “Within the performance, there is a multitude of metaphors linked to the perception of the body in movement. Working together as a team and seeking new forms of expression, we wanted to convey the power and depth of the shared female experience now lost. Feelings of loss for traditional rituals and collective spaces, combined with the potential for catharsis in humble and repetitive tasks.”
L'Uno è il Molto comes from a long exploration of these themes, developed over the years in a series of video portraits shot by Mazzolari, which began with a collaboration with Deborah Gismondi (former dancer at La Scala in Milan) in 2011 in Italy. Titled I Dance Alone and I-II-III, these video portraits aimed to capture the ethos of women/dancers who seemed to break away from the classical repertoire of dance, with the body becoming an essential element of movement itself, occupying space and choreography. Initially, these videos focused on researching the movement of the body and the plasticity of fabrics in water. Later on, Mazzolari and Gismondi understood the evolution of this research and the emergence of a broader and certainly more ambitious artistic investigation into the world of dance and the socio-anthropological aspects of the female gender. In 2012, Mazzolari collaborated with artist Conrad Shawcross, producing fabrics for the costumes of Machina, a commission from the Royal Ballet, as part of a triple tribute to Dame Monica Mason during the London 2012 Olympics program. It was here that Mazzolari met Ilaria Martello, currently senior costume production manager at the Royal Opera House in London and executive producer of Alone, Together (2021).
