ANDRÉ HEMER. (b.1981)


André Hemer is a New Zealand-born artist with a diverse background in painting and contemporary art practice. He holds a PhD in Painting from the University of Sydney (2015), where his research focused on the intersections between traditional painting techniques and digital technologies. Hemer’s education journey also includes an MFA (Distinction) from the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand (2006), where his work gained recognition for its innovation and technical mastery.
His artistic journey led him to further artistic development with a prestigious postgraduate painting residency at the Royal College of Art, London, UK, where he refined his multidisciplinary approach to contemporary painting. Additionally, Hemer earned a BFA (1st Class Honours) from the University of Canterbury in 2003, marking the beginning of his evolving artistic voice.
Hemer's work reflects his engagement with digital media, abstraction, and material exploration, and he has exhibited widely both in New Zealand and internationally. His academic background, paired with his professional experience, positions him as an influential figure in contemporary art and education.
