XIMENA MALDONADO SANCHEZ DIENTE DE LECHE

25 October - 2 December 2025 Galleria SARP

SARP is pleased to present DIente de Leche by Ximena Maldonado Sanchez (b. 1999 Irapuato, Mexico).
The title diente de leche — milk tooth — alludes to a cycle of destruction, rebirth, and alchemy that unfolds both in ourselves and in the landscape. In volcanic territory, these cycles are vital: eruptions bury and preserve objects, plants, and minerals while creating the fertile soil where new life takes root. This idea refers to the word ‘dagala”, patches or islands of vegetation emerging from volcanic landscapes. What decays returns transformed.
Milk teeth remain with us only briefly. Just as we begin to know them, they fall, embodying a process of loss and renewal. Our body becomes a cocoon for what is to come, and we are asked to trust in transformation. Do we extend this same trust to our surroundings?
This exhibition reflects on those parallel cycles, where body and landscape echo one another. Another key theme of the residency was understanding local ingredients, techniques for transforming ingredients and how to process them. The act of eating is defined by our mouth, it is an archaic technique. Losing teeth, fermenting fruit, flowing lava — each is an alchemical reminder that matter is never lost, only changed. When we see the landscape, we are not outside it. We are the landscape, briefly conscious of itself, looking back through our eyes.
