ENZO TOMASELLO LEBENSWELT

20 May - 20 July 2022

The artist is the one who can evoke what is enclosed in matter, a matter suspended between life and consciousness. The essence of his works tends to continuous research on the materials, in which the subject experiences the visible and the invisible through his body. The relationship between man and environment, man and nature, in search of a balance of the world lead him to investigate the theme of the tree, as a central theme of the world of nature to bring audiences closer to themes of visual aesthetics without overlooking the concept of sustainability in a discourse, that is not so much political .
The leaves of trees and ferns, the oldest plants on the planet applied on the canvas take on mystical and philosophical meanings and are often covered with layers of colour that thus give plasticity and volume, becoming three-dimensional forms. In his works, there is a continuous search for unexplored experiences of the mind (made up of silences, long walks in the open air), and the leaves that are the peripheral elements of the structure of the trees, become the main element of Enzo Tomasello’s experimentation on the concept of natural space, and on the concept of built and ethereal space-time of the spirit. The leaves are suspended between spirit and matter in a space often delimited by closed lines that make us reflect on the ‘built space’ and on the interaction of the subject in the world. The application of the gold leaf, the fragments of gold on the canvas, are reminiscences of a sacred and ancient world, esoteric symbols that detach the work from its historicity to project itself into the non-place of the eternal.
The works of Enzo Tomasello allow a continuous relationship between those who look at the work and the material object that is the painting itself, and the artist. And the space that these works occupy in the exhibition space is a visible space in which the artist does not want to communicate, but to open a dialogue with the past and the contemporary, a coherent and continuously unfolding discourse reflective of our pragmatic times.
