Mediterranean is a research theme that analyses the pressing issues of our times. SARP proudly presents a groundbreaking new initiative to explore the rich historical and cultural connections between Sicily, the Mediterranean, and Africa. This project seeks to document and highlight the deep intertwining of these regions through the lenses of art, history, and shared heritage.
One of the key aspects of this project will focus on the influence of Mediterranean and African cultures on Sicilian art and society, with a special emphasis on the impact of Mediterannean art and symbolism. By bringing together renowned African, Middle Eastern and Mediterannean artists, as well as Sicilian artists, SARP aims to bridge contemporary visual expressions with ancient traditions, providing an artistic dialogue that spans centuries.
The project will feature exhibitions, workshops, and collaborative art installations that explore these interconnected histories.
It will also showcase works that illuminate the significant cultural exchange that has occurred over millennia, from Sicily’s ancient Phoenician and Greek influences to the vibrant North African and Egyptian, Tunisian, Algerian art that has shaped its identity.
By fostering collaboration between contemporary Sicilian and African artists, including those from Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Marocco, and Middle East the project aims to create a deeper understanding of how these diverse cultures have influenced each other and how they continue to shape one another in the modern world.
Through this multifaceted approach, SARP will document this ongoing cultural exchange and showcase its richness through art, highlighting the shared histories that bind Sicily, the Mediterranean, and Africa together in a dynamic and evolving relationship.
